System Design Document is prepared during the project initiation phase and serves as the main framework for the system deployment and configuration. Depending on the requirements the system design document can be as detailed or high-level as required. The business process requirements should be thoroughly reflected and mapped to the system available functionality. The input for the system design document comes from many sources but the main are business requirements statement and gap analysis documents. Normally the system design document consists of the following sections:
1. System Overview - provide a general description of the software system including its functionality.
2. System Architecture - This section provides a high-level overview of the system functionality and how it can support the business processes.
3. Detailed System Design - Most components described in the system architecture section will require a more detailed discussion. Other lower-level components and subcomponents may need to be described as well. Each subsection of this section will refer to or contain a detailed description of a system software component.
